I was lucky at a design school in 2002 to have a ā€œhistoryā€ class with a UC Berkeley professor who was teaching between two schools. It started with modern history of the west, the enlightenment, religious and secular divisions, differing philosophical views, leading up to the modern rise in exceptionalism and atheistic technocratic thinking (reductive materialism) which has all facilitated the desire for humans to play God via genetic manipulation. The class was designed to instill awareness and caution about where we were headed. By far the most important class I’ve ever had as a product designer.

Where we are as a society isn’t an accident. It’s also no accident they make ā€œplaying Godā€ seem necessary, harmless and logical. But we all know, EVERY tool can become a weapon when in the hands of intelligent yet morally deprived selfish psychopathic humans. And here we are... exactly where he predicted. I wish I remembered the name of the one teacher who made the most difference in my life.

At this moment, I'm in the middle of reading Doudna's book! It's a slog (I'm not a scientist) but I understand the Big Picture. I'm only reading it because my granddaughter who was a freshman at Allegheny College last year was assigned Doudna's book in her genetics class. I became suspicious that Allegheny was Woke and more when she was required to put her "preferred pronouns" on her dormitory door. All my fears about Allegheny and its agenda have been realized. Great Substack, by the way.
