There is a new book out that perhaps John should read. It begins with the election of Lincoln. It is a very dense book and I've not gotten far, but two people at the library said it is an excellent history. "Demon of Unrest" by Erik Larson

I prefer to read the books closer to the time of Lincoln....Burke McCarty , The Suppressed Truth about the Assassination of Abraham LIncoln and 50Years in the Church of Rome by Charles Chiniquiy [whom LIncoln represented a s a lawyer] And, TEAM OF RIVALS by Doris Goodwin is excellent tho newer. Also, Lincoln by Carl Sandburg, 6 volumes, entire history of LIncoln, no propaganda. Lincoln was an excellent, magnanimous man and those who knew him attested to that fact. The Jesuits killed him and then altered the constitution by their subterfuge. Thank you for your reply!

Those books sound interesting. The book I am reading is close to the time of Lincoln. - unless you mean authors who wrote about him at the time.
