I want to share the parallels with the failed Zika agenda from 2015:

Zika!

THE SET UP:

“ZIKA: 500 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE AMERICAS AT RISK - Dr. Sylvain Aldighieri, the Zika incident manager for the Pan American Health Organization, said Tuesday that half a billion people in the Americas are at risk of being infected by the Zika virus.

Aldighieri and NIAID Director Anthony Fauci briefed reporters at PAHO headquarters in Washington on the status of the Zika response. Both warned that they expect to see an influx in cases in the coming months, Pro's Brianna Ehley reports.

- Vaccine developments: Researchers are preparing a vaccine study to begin in September and should be able to determine if the vaccine is ready to test on groups of people at the beginning of 2017, Fauci said. If so, the vaccine will be tested first in an infected country and might be ready for widescale use in anywhere from one to three years.

Fauci repeated warnings that Congress must approve the full sum requested by the administration if it is to be prepared to respond to Zika

THE PITCH:

PELOSI on Zika-

“Good afternoon, everyone. Thank you very much to our Members, especially, to our very special guests for joining us this afternoon on subject of great concerns to our great country. I am so grateful to the Co-Chairs of the Steering and Policy Committee, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro and Congresswoman Donna Edwards for bringing us together this afternoon. It is my privilege now to call to order this hearing: ‘The Zika Public Health Crisis: the Urgent Need for the President’s Emergency Funding Request’.

“Every day, we learn more about the accelerating threat that the Zika virus presents to expectant mothers across the country. Every day, we lose valuable time needed to avert what could be a major public health emergency in communities across our country. And yet every day, this Congress refuses to provide the emergency resources needed to protect America’s families from this terrible virus.

“There are already more than 1,000 Americans – including more than 100 pregnant women – with confirmed cases of Zika; but House Republicans do nothing. Last month, Congress voted twice to block emergency resources to protect American communities from Zika. We refuse to stand idle. We will keep demanding action.

“Today, we are very honored to hear from a distinguished board of witnesses who stand on the front lines of the fight against Zika in our country. We are pleased to welcome Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Mayor of the City of New Orleans, Louisiana; Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, some call him a hero – the NIH – and Dr. Anne Schuchat, a Principal Deputy Director, Centers for Disease Control.

“Our guests have a clearer perspective than anyone about how Congress’s dangerous refusal to address the threat of Zika in a timely way could have tragic consequences for America’s families. They will be more fully introduced by our distinguished Co-Chairs. And we all know that we must pass the President’s $1.9 billion emergency supplemental request – which the Congress has been obstructing for months.

“To the Congress we say: Do your job. Stop standing in the way of the emergency action we need to protect America’s families. Do your job. Join us in averting this frightening public health crisis. Do your job. Swiftly and fully-fund the President’s request for emergency funds to address the Zika threat in America.

THE SPIN:

KLAIN ON ZIKA: AMERICA's POLITICAL SYSTEM HAS FAILED - The former White House Ebola czar castigated lawmakers for failing to reach a Zika funding deal in a high-profile op-ed on Sunday.

"It is not a question of whether babies will be born in the United States with Zika-related microcephaly - it is a question of when and how many," Ron Klain wrote in Sunday's Washington Post. "For years to come, these children will be a visible, human reminder of the cost of absurd wrangling in Washington, of preventable suffering, of a failure of our political system to respond

FEAR FACTOR:

WARNING SHOTS FOR LEADERSHIP: "Mosquitoes With Zika Virus Could Hit U.S. in Next Month," Damian Paletta for the W.S.J.: "Mosquitoes carrying the dangerous Zika virus are expected to begin infecting Americans within the U.S. in the next 'month or so,' the government's top infectious disease expert said Sunday, as officials race to prevent a widespread outbreak of the virus that is believed linked to birth defects. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on ABC that more than 500 Americans already have the Zika virus... all those cases are travel-related... But the landscape will change soon, Dr. Fauci said, as infected mosquitoes enter the U.S. mainland."

"The two primary species of mosquito believed likely to carry Zika in the U.S. are estimated to have a wide reach. Experts believe one will blanket the southern U.S. and reach as far north as San Francisco and New York City. Another species could spread widely along the East Coast and into New England."

PRESSURE'S ON. Both chambers have passed their own Zika bills, but they've got a bunch of differences to reconcile, and the path forward is uncertain.

THE BLAME:

(DNC) Talking Points – House Republicans: #DoYourJob to Address

the Zika Virus

Do Your Job, House Republicans

For 80 days, House Republicans have also refused to act on President Obama’s urgent request for an emergency supplemental to confront the growing threat of the Zika virus. There are more than 1,000 Americans – including more than 100 pregnant women – with confirmed cases of Zika, but House Republicans continue to dawdle in the face of this frightening and lethal threat.

Democrats are sending a clear message to the Republican Congress: do your job to keep the American people safe.

Every day, we learn more and more about the danger Zika represents to expectant mothers. But House Republicans’ only response is reckless obstruction and unconscionable inaction.

· The House GOP has now voted twice to block emergency resources to protect American communities from Zika.

WASHINGTON POST // EDITORIAL BOARD

The Republican-controlled Congress has wasted entirely too much time sitting on President Obama’s request for emergency funding to combat the arrival of the Zika virus to the mainland United States. The National Governors Association, not exactly an alarmist group, declared that “the nation is on the threshold of a public health emergency.” Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says that Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory where the virus is already on the move, “is on the precipice of a really serious disaster.” Now, it is time to buckle down and approve the president’s request

2 tangential points-

*our mosquito populations may serve a purpose: to compete with and prevent other disease 🦠 carrying species from our ecosystems.

*Pelosi “Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, some call him a hero – the NIH “

HERO 😵‍💫😷🤢🤮
