Unfortunately the clerics and the Previously exiled Ayatollah Khumeni did a massive campaign against the Shah, targeting mostly college men. That’s who I mostly saw demonstrating and chanting in the streets calling for the ousting of the Emperor. And of course with a weak US President, the coup was inevitable sadly. If Reza Pahlavi were still king, we would not have all these problems in the Middle East. Iran would not be the #1 state sponsor of terror. Women had much more freedoms, and the Shah wanted to modernize the country and be a trading partner with the world. Now Iran is oppressive and there are many citizens who want to go back to the way it was. The Shah’s son is the rightful heir to the throne and he has a huge following.
