Word definitions change over time. When the income tax law came into being in 1913, the american public were elated and wanted income tax.
Why?
Because In 1913, money earned by actual work was called wages and compensation. Income was money gotten without work or hard labor.
A pay check was wages and compensation.
Rich people money from non labor like investments, dividends, profits of sales etc was called income.
Income tax was not on earned money by ones paid job.
Roosevelt changed the definitions illegally to where we are today.
The rich fought the income tax demanded by the people so a horrible compromise was made and the tax forms used to have small print at the bottom saying that income tax is voluntary.
This is why even today, if in court you can present the correct legal data to the judge, you go home owing no tax to the IRS. But if you don't have the correct legal data for the judge, you may go to jail. This shows how sick the judges are that know the truth but act on a case by case basis.
Tax to states is a bit messy to get out of. You may still have to work up what they call federal tax just to get a number to pay each state.
