Lucky you that you can still do it. Indeed I saw what goes on in so called natural food stores and on the farmer's markets. Same thing as in the stores, only twice the price. I know younger people who did like you do, and admire them for it, because farming is hard work. My yard grows very little because of poor soil, but I use whatever I find. Blackberries, plums, edible greens. Natural and not sprayed. The difference is obvious like you state too - berries are less than half the size of store bought !
That's what we are doing now. Not easy for city folk initially, but it not that difficult once you get into it.
