There is another book, "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. It was read by both (a decade ago)

Inga and myself (my Mom) at the same time on kindle. I checked...Kindle now has an "enhanced"

version, and I do not recommend that one. Paperback = $7., or check with the library.

Apparently it was in the best-seller listing for a decade. Anyway...though fictional, Mom said

the book was an accurate depiction. She was only a bit older than the protagonist in the book.

It was a a difficult story to read, but I mention it because there are parallels (1939-1943)

you will find in the USA today. It illustrates how one becomes jobless, poverty stricken,

starving and even killed for uttering a bad word about the groups in power. BTW, my Dad,

now gone, was captured by Eisenhower's army, (17-18yrs. old) and put in an open air

fenced prison. He was near the fence when US jeeps rolled by hollering for American speakers.

He did speak English and was removed. His "job" was to interpret so the Army guys could

exchange food for goods of value. Nearly all prisoners died, millions, from starvation and

exposure. Mom escaped being imprisoned but was with the German Red Cross, and later

recruited (English speaker) by a US Colonel to be inside staff, mainly taking care of the

Boxer dog and interpreting for the 3 outside "staff". I have a picture of her, in her pristine

uniform, with the huge boxer, Geisha. It hangs in my kitchen. Mom is 96-near 97, doing

well.

Never ever hope for war. The military consigns ALL food, and the populous goes hungry.

There was no meat to be had for 5 years. Wealthy people traded gold jewelry, and anything

else of value for a few potatoes or an egg or two, at great risk to themselves. There is much more

but you can study those matters on your own if you care to. Also, and I don't know this for

certain, it has been said and written that Eisenhower's mother was a Jew.
