The Canadian government basically gave up all rights to the Chinese government during Canada's "conservative" government under Stephen Harper. During his conservative "reign" in the 2000's he signed the Foreign Investment Protection Act that gave the Chinese government the right to physically protect (with military ground forces) any Canadian "asset" they invested in. e.g. All of Canada's Oil production.
