Congress has been abdicating all military conflict duties to the executive branch now for decades. This is really no different. They will all be on crying about it, but they are happy. They had nothing to do with the decision.

Great article by Jonathan Turley about exactly this in The Hill I believe today. He comes to the conclusion that while the Constitution requires Congress to approve they have abdicated their rights.

Though the Constitution states they have the power to declare war, it does not state that the Commander in Chief does not, since he commands the military. If both parties and both houses “declared war” , the Declaration would land on the Commander in Chief’s desk to direct warfare. This is why Congress hasn’t declared war in many decades. The strike today was a surprise given the off ramps that were proffered for months prior and the purpose was to finish off an ally’s campaign with the appropriate high level weapons for strategic strikes.

For weeks I could only consider the risk. It’s a relief that it’s over, but we must guard our borders diligently.

What a sweet deal our ally has. Start a war you can't fight or win? We've got your back. Would you like world war 3 to start wirh Russia? If so, vote Democrat. If you prefer it start in the middle east after our president lied to vs conspiring with leaders there, put on your MAGA hat. And don't forget MAHA who will make sure we aren't eating any artificial food dyes before the retire to their bunkers.

We are the enemy they are fighting against. Never forget that.

This is squarely on point for the majority of Constitution honoring Americans.

Especially in a divided country such as our Republic is at this time, the Commander in Chief will be challenged on all his enumerated authorities. The means of achieving peace are always subject to doubt because the enemy/other always has a vote, even if they no longer exist, since anyone watching will vicariously defend the perceived ‘rights’ of the defeated.

Whether this action achieves a true measure of peace will be determined by the votes of the onlookers, especially the ones who have the most invested in the Iran.

Whether our Commander in Chief acted wisely, proportionately, and under honest ‘intelligence’ is for history which is now underway in due diligence. Here’s hoping that the Complex got a better return on investment than the propaganda ‘win’ the Israeli’s got. I think it’s fair to say it felt a lot like a big stakes hustle.

One thing is for sure: DJT, POTUS 47, is not a waffling, wimpy wuss.

For reasons I can't fathom, Trump and the neocon deep state seem to think that Iran will roll over and play dead. Do they not understand human nature at all?

This single action has turned me away from Trump. How many others are there like me? He was not elected to protect Israel. We did not want a war. And he is delusional if he thinks this isn't going to escalate, and that Americans won't be killed. For Israel.

Well, as a retired LEO with 25 years in uniform, who’s been shot, stabbed and been in some very dangerous situations, I’m hardly speaking from the sidelines. I grew up in a military family. We know the risks and dangers of service and we accept them. As a LEO you know every day that you may not come home. In the military the possibility of being deployed is always there. Just part of the job.

I respectfully disagree. I do not think that Israel was "losing" at all. Iran was losing badly, and was losing the support of the Iranian people, who want the islamic regime gone. Trump provided the knockout blow to Iran's nuclear facilities, that Israel could not do. This does not mean that Trump has entered into a new war. On the contrary, he is putting an end to the deep state regime in Iran that has been an enemy of the US for decades, the regime supported by Obama and Biden and the globalists who want the US to be involved in war.

This was no different than taking out of Soleimani.

Credenda's avatar

Dave, that all was CIA propaganda ,that the people were dying to have western freedom and wanted to be liberated by Israel/America. They have been galvanized as a people like never before. Even the most liberal elements are fully behind the government now. Our government always makes this claim about every war we start in order to make it more palatable to the American people but it’s always a lie. When attacked, countries tend to develop more cohesion and determination. BTW, re taking out Soleimani, are political assassinations now the new norm for American foreign policy? In 1953 we got rid of a democratically elected, western oriented president (Mossediq) because he nationalized Iran’s oil. We and the Brits cooperated to regain the oil profits. We installed the Shah and his family who ruled brutally through his secret police, SAVAK. The people hated him. Don’t you remember? I went to college with young Iranians who wanted to overthrow him and go in a religiously conservative direction. So in come the mullahs. But much is changing, women are free to skip the veil now if they choose and they are fully integrated into the educational and tech sectors. We will not prevail against the Persians. They are a proud, ancient people who know how to endure suffering. I hope we survive what’s coming.

Yes and other countries have longer memories than Americans. I don't know if trump lied to the leaders in the middle east on his peace tour or if he lied to the American people that it was a peace tour, but either way, it's not good. Oh wait, it's like Communism right? We just haven't done "regime change" correctly in the past, have we?

This is Israel's business, not that of the US. They are not a territory of the US or a state. If they could not do it without bunker busters and certain planes, they should have built them themselves. Not rely on a third party.
