In 2012, highway charges for central Tokyo were 700 yen, about $5-6 bucks. These public roads were privatized in 2005. About a million vehicles daily on this stretch of connected highways, down a bit in 2020 with covid to 856,000. All highways are tollways. From tomorrow, with a second increase, prices rise from 1,320 to 1,950. Nearly 3 times the price in 10 years. The first I heard of the upcoming increase was January, so not strictly Ukraine related. All final deliveries are by truck, so either they stay on the highways or clog the normal streets. There will of course be a knock-on effect. Supermarkets and restaurants have also announced price increases starting tomorrow.
